Situation: A national retail chain of gas stations’ environmental consulting firm, one of our regular customers, contacted us to handle the maintenance of remediation ponds for the chain’s stations. During routine work on a site, the EnviroServe team discovered extensive diesel contamination that had infiltrated deep into the soil and pond lining after a diesel leak.
Retail Gas Station – Drainage Pond Remediation
Services Provided:
- Initial Site Assessment and Incident Discovery: The project began as routine maintenance of a remediation pond, but the EnviroServe team discovered significant diesel intrusion into the pond and underlying soil, requiring a change in project scope.
- Contaminated Water Management: EnviroServe removed all standing, contaminated surface water from the pond. They followed up by pumping out additional water to access and address the contaminated soil below.
- Excavation and Soil Remediation: Once the pond was drained, the EnviroServe team performed extensive excavation, ultimately removing up to 12 feet of diesel-impacted soil as required by environmental testing and regulatory oversight.
- Waste Handling and Transportation: All excavated soil and removed materials were securely transported to licensed hazardous waste facilities, ensuring environmental compliance and proper disposal.
- Reconstruction of Remediation Pond: The EnviroServe team rebuilt and reconstructed the pond, including new lining and redamming, to restore it to safe, functional and regulatory-compliant standards.
- Regulatory Engagement and Documentation: Throughout the process, the team worked under the supervision of local natural resource authorities, consistently meeting or exceeding regulatory guidelines.
- Project Documentation: Before-and-after photos, along with supporting project records, were collected to document the work performed and provide evidence of compliance and remediation.
Results:
- Successful Environmental Remediation: The remediation was completed to the full satisfaction of local natural resource authorities, meeting all environmental standards and regulatory requirements. The pond was restored to a safe and compliant condition.
- Resumption of Normal Operations: The gas station was able to promptly resume normal business operations at the site after a significant, potentially business-halting contamination event. Timely action minimized business downtime and avoided loss of revenue.
