Rail Car Diesel Release Remediation

Situation:
A locomotive in the Midwest suffered a significant diesel leak, releasing a large volume of fuel. The spill posed both operational and environmental hazards and required urgent response. One of our regular customers called us for assistance.

Services Provided:

  • Immediate EnviroServe response to the scene, leveraging pre-existing contracts and readiness position with railroad.
  • Deployment of trained crews to assess and address the diesel spill.
  • Excavation of contaminated soil under the rails, as required, and mitigation to limit the spread to rail yard edges and nearby properties.
  • Coordination with railroad hazmat managers for comprehensive incident handling.
  • Monitoring for potential spread to storm drains and/or creeks and appropriate escalation if risk detected.

Results:

  • Diesel was successfully contained and removed from the affected area, restoring rail operations.
  • Risk to the environment and public safety was minimized, especially regarding the threat of the spill reaching water systems.
  • Demonstrated the value of the EnviroServe rapid response protocol and strong relationships with hazmat managers and railroad personnel.
  • Lessons learned influenced future handling of large-scale rail-related fuel spills.
