Situation: A large food manufacturer, a client of a total waste management company, needed emergency support and specialized handling of contaminated products during a national Salmonella recall. The waste management company, one of our regular customers, called us to help.
Emergency Response to Salmonella Food Product Recall
Services Provided:
- Partnered with waste management company to provide on-site labor and operational support at seven warehouse locations.
- Supplied forklifts with various attachments to safely handle and move contaminated product without breaking pallets (using clamp mechanisms for slip sheets).
- Coordinated barcode scanning and tracking at each location for precise inventory management during the recall.
- Loaded product (in their original containers) into walking floor trailers or end-dump trailers for safe transport.
- Adapted equipment and solutions to site-specific requirements (e.g., electric forklifts for indoor locations).
- Managed a week-long trial run and then scaled up for the projects which lasted from 29 to 90 days at each site.
- Hired and supervised temp labor as needed to supplement project crews at multiple locations.
Results:
- Provided a tailored, location-specific solution for each warehouse involved, addressing unique site requirements.
- Completed safe and efficient removal, transportation and regulated disposal of recalled food product.
- Maintained thorough records for compliance and tracking throughout the process.
